Arum on McGregor vs. Mayweather: ‘It’s a joke, it shouldn’t be allowed’

Promoter Bob Arum doesn’t like the idea of Conor McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather.

The Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather rumors continue to fester and while it’s still highly unlikely to happen, it seems everyone has an opinion on it. One person that understands the promotional side of a potential fight like that more than most people would be the ageless Bob Arum, promoter of Top Rank Boxing.

Arum is never one to hold back when it comes to his feelings on things, and his disdain for Mayweather is well-documented. So is his disdain for MMA. When he was asked by Fight Hub about the possibility of McGregor vs. Mayweather, you can probably guess what he had to say:

“It’s ridiculous. You know, McGregor is an MMA guy and that’s a different sport than boxing. And if McGregor fought (Mayweather) as a boxer, it’s a joke. It shouldn’t be allowed.”

The interviewer brought up other instances of boxer vs. UFC fighter, most notably James Toney vs. Randy Couture, but they both noted that the bout took place in the Octagon. A far older bout was also referenced – the infamous “fight” between Muhammad Ali and pro wrestler Antonio Inoki in 1976. Arum amusingly commented that it was fake, and he knew it was fake because he promoted it.

When pressed for the full story, he smiled and walked away. Check out the whole interview in the video above.
